Overheard on Sen. Pat Toomey's Cellphone:

Brian Sims

“Sen. Toomey, thank you for voting to advance ENDA out of Senate committee so that it can come to a vote on the Senate floor. I challenged you previously, so I have to thank you for supporting us.”

Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia), the first openly gay legislator to be elected to the state’s General Assembly

Pat Toomey

“You are welcome Rep. Sims. I’ve long been a supporter of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people, you know.”

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pennsylvania)

Brian Sims

“Uhmm… sure. But, Sen. Toomey, you seem to be lobbying for an amendment in the law that would allow religious institutions to discriminate… do you really think that way?”
Rep. Sims

Pat Toomey

“Well if the fundamentalists don’t want to hire carpet munchers, they should have that right. And if the Catholics don’t want to hire fudge packers, so be it. So, yes, I do believe they should be exempt. God should not have to follow federal non-discrimination laws. If HE wants to discriminate, he damn well should be allowed to do so.”
Sen. Toomey

Brian Sims

“So let me get this straight: the organizations that spread the word of Christ, the groups that share his message of love, understanding, compassion, and acceptance should be exempt from following a federal law that would keep them from hiring or employing people on the basis of whom they sleep with, which is actually not a choice but rather a biological imperative programmed at birth and made possible by the same God about whom those churches proselytize?”
Rep. Sims

Pat Toomey

“Uhmm… yes.”
Sen. Toomey

Brian Sims

“Don’t you think that is maybe a little hypocritical?”
Rep. Sims

Pat Toomey

“It ain’t all about peace, love, and understanding, Mr. Fairypants. Some of it is about hate and distrust. Remember that.”
Sen. Toomey

Brian Sims

“Sen. Toomey, I am really glad you aren’t a gay man.”
Rep. Sims

Pat Toomey

“What? Why not? I’m not attractive enough for you boys?”
Sen. Toomey

Brian Sims

“How you look doesn’t matter. You’re an attractive enough man, in a kid-who-rides-the-short-bus kind of way. The fact is you’re just too fucking ignorant to be a gay man. The union would not allow you in.”
Rep. Sims

Pat Toomey

“You have a union? Goddammit! Another fucking union to bust!”
Sen. Toomey
