“The
government should NOT be helping the poor, goddammit! We should be doing that as
individuals or through our churches!”
Rep.
Doug Lamalfa (R-California), who last week voted to
dramatically cut the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program for the
poor. His family’s rice farm has received $5.1 million in farm subsidies since
1995 as part of the same legislation that funds SNAP benefits.
