Overheard in New Jersey:

Stephen Sweeney
"If Gov. Christie would allow New Jersey Senate Republicans to vote in favor of it, we’d have gay marriage in New Jersey tomorrow. But the governor has ordered them not to support it because he only supports civil unions. Without a few Republicans, we can’t pass it. Now I have hypoglycemia and I’m feeling low on sugar—do you have any doughnuts?"

Chris Christie

“That is a big fat lie. I would never. That is offensive. I would never exert political pressure like that. I would never play with peoples’ lives and happiness just to score points politically. It doesn’t matter to me if New Jersey legislators approve gay marriage or not, because I’d just veto it. I don’t believe that even a veto override would affect my 2016 presidential campaign at all. Why, if I represented just the fourteenth state to approve gay marriage, nobody would bat an eye—certainly not the blood thirsty, same-sex-marriage-hating conservative wing of the national GOP. NOT AT ALL. You know what ‘Sweeney’ means in New Jersey-speak, don’t you? ‘Full-of-shit lying bastard.’ It’s in our state dictionarylook it up, pal! Now, pass me the doughnuts, would you? I’m only eating them because I'm nervous.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), former BFF of President Barack Obama
