“New York discovered that by spending a little bit more state money
to increase the heating assistance program helps poor families avoid cuts to
their food stamp benefits pushed through with the new federal farm bill a few weeks ago. In New York, we will spend $6 million more in LIHEAP
funding to avoid $457 million in food stamp cuts. Pretty goddam good
return on our investment, don’t you think? And we will avoid a pretty significant economic hit for our grocery stores and food retailers. Economic development and WE’RE HELPING PEOPLE. Imagine that! Government HELPING people! We are pretty fucking smart in New York, aren't we?”
