Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, Ukrainian-born general secretary of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), who presided over
the country from 1964 until his death in 1982. Breshnev was
responsible for an "ethnic purge" of nearly 100,000 Moldovans and was associated with
other ethnic purges within the Soviet Union.
