“That
14 year old girl was a lot older than her chronological age and was
just as much in control of the situation as the then 51-year-old man who raped
her. OK, so he held her down. OK, he coerced her. OK, he was in a position of
authority over her. OK, so he REALLY REALLY coerced her and then outright RAPED her. But I’m not going
to send a man to prison for that! The girl was a tart, a tease, a tantalizing
tasty morsel and you can’t blame a guy for that. It was HER fault,
goddammit! And I can’t help it that she committed suicide two years after the
relationship started and isn’t here to testify on her own behalf. But if she
was, I’d tell her the same thing I’m saying now!”

Judge G. Todd Baugh,
Billings, Montana, after sentencing Stacey Rambold to 15 years in prison and
then suspending all but 31 days if the sentence. Rambold was a senior high school
teacher at the time he raped the girl in a state where a person cannot legally
give consent to have sexual intercourse until they are 16. Baugh has since
issued an apology for his remarks, but efforts to remove Baugh from office are
underway.
