Overheard in Pennsylvania:

Donna Oberlander

“Here in Pennsylvania, we are not only going to keep federal funding from covering the cost of abortions, we are also going to make it so that women cannot even buy insurance that will cover abortions, or if they can, it will be so expensive only the wealthiest people out there will be able to get it. We ain’t even gonna let women get an abortion even if their health is in danger. We like our women barefoot, pregnant, and toothless here in the Keystone State, unless you are a state representative, then you are just toothless. Obamacare sucks. Poor people don’t need medical care and they don’t need no abortions. Women are meant to have all the babies God wants them to have. It’s true. I read it in the bible.”

Pennsylvania state Rep. Donna Oberlander (R), proud sponsor of legislation that would keep insurance sold through the federal health exchange from covering the costs of an abortion. Oberlander has suggested that women could purchase “abortion insurance” outside of the exchange, but no such policy exists, except in Oberlander's imagination. Pennsylvania has refused to develop the insurance exchange that will be part of Obamacare while adding the anti-abortion rule, claiming it will keep federal funds from being spent on abortion, though federal law already precludes that. The legislation, which women's health and women's rights advocates say is designed only to restrict the rights of women, awaits the signature of Gov. Tom Corbett, who doesn't particularly believe women have rights.
