Overheard in a History Book:


Bessie Coleman


"Always wear your seatbelt. In fact, wear two and a goddam parachute."

Bessie Coleman, the world's first African-American women aviator. Born in Texas, she earned her pilot's license in 1921 in France—two years before Amelia Earhart earned hers. Colemen went to France to study aviation after being denied admission to school's in the United States. Coleman died April 30, 1926, when she fell from the plane during an aviation exhibition. She was 34 years old.
